The Italian side Claims Opening Champions League Victory Powered by Hojlund's Double
On-loan Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund scored twice as the Serie A champions overcame Sporting to secure their maiden Champions League triumph of the campaign.
Both of Hojlund's goals came with assists from ex-City playmaker Kevin de Bruyne, while Colombia attacker Luis Suarez converted a penalty for the Portuguese outfit Sporting.
The decisive goal arrived late in the game, with this positive result following the team's 2-0 loss at Manchester City in their first fixture.
The Dane's Journey to Italy
The forward finalized a season-long loan move to the Italian title holders on transfer deadline day at the beginning of September having not featured in United's first four matches of the new season.
The 22-year-old scored 26 goals in 95 appearances during his time at Manchester United following his big-money transfer from Atalanta in August 2023.
He scored just four times in the English top flight in 2024-25 but has now scored three times in five games for the Italian side, who have an option to purchase the Danish striker for £38 million at the conclusion of the campaign if certain conditions are met, such as qualifying for the Champions League.

The striker demonstrated speed and power for his opening strike when he collected De Bruyne's through ball before calmly slotting home past Sporting goalkeeper Rui Silva.
Matteo Politano fouled Maximiliano Araujo to concede a spot-kick after the break, which was scored by Suarez to level the scores, but Hojlund scored the decisive goal with a courageous headed effort after De Bruyne's cross from the left flank.
Sporting have now also won one and lost one of their first two group games after they began with a convincing win over Kazakh side Kairat.
