World Health Organization Sounds Alert Over Acute Scarcity of Weight-Loss Injections

Under 10% of people that would benefit from GLP-1 drugs including Wegovy can access them, warns the World Health Organization as it publishes its inaugural guidance on the medications.

With in excess of 1,000,000,000 people worldwide now classified as obese, it is calling for increased and just availability to this class of drugs.

Based on forecasts, in excess of 2,000,000,000 will be obese by 2030 unless action is taken.

"Our latest guidance acknowledges that excess weight is a long-term condition that can be managed with comprehensive and ongoing support," said the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, insufficient output, and supply-chain constraints are major barriers to broad availability to the jabs that can help people shift substantial weight, says the body.

Weight-Loss Drug Shortage

Even under the current most favorable scenario, the supply of these medications could only cover about 100 million people – less than 10% of the global need, as stated by the WHO.

The guideline encourages nations and manufacturers to increase access, via measures like licensing agreements.

The intellectual property rights on the active ingredient – the primary ingredient of the drug Wegovy – is set to lapse in multiple nations in 2026.

The Way Weight-Loss Injections Function

The injections mimick a biological compound to delay gastric emptying, suppress the appetite and enhance satiety so individuals eat less.

Individuals commonly see weight reduction within a few weeks of beginning the once-weekly jabs.

Research indicates people may put most of the weight back on after a year of stopping the drug, as their usual food cravings return.

Being carrying excess weight increases your risk for experiencing diseases, including diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and certain cancers.

Obesity concerns people in all nations and was linked to millions of fatalities worldwide in 2024, as per the health agency.
